A Sewing Joke From My Surgeon

So I made it through surgery today, one deep breath at a time, and after my face was all stitched up, I said to my surgeon, "Now I know how the shirt I'm sewing feels."

"Well, I actually cut YOU on the bias," he replied.

And he was right; he did cut me on the bias. Only in New York!

(Turns out his grandmother was once a costumer to the stars and he grew up watching her work on her old Singer. I can only remember so many details when I'm in the middle of being sutured, but I believe he said Benny Goodman was one of her clients.)

My husband and daughter bought me a slice of black and white cake from Amy's Bread at Chelsea Market across the street from the hospital where I was sliced and sewn. Then we came home and I ate it while we watched Project Runway, so this day is pretty much perfect.

Also, my bird-print blouse is almost done; only buttonholes and the hem are left!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

  5. Yay! If you need to milk the lying on the couch more, you can always fill your med bottles with tic-tacs and pretend you're still in oodles of pain. But I would like to see the bird-print blouse someday.

  6. That's too funny! …on the bias =)

I had to get stitches on my upper arm a year ago. They used black thread which looked pretty gross and i remember thinking i probably have some thread at home that would've been a better match! the stitches came out and i still have a scar. i didn't go to a plastic surgeon and i know they can do much better work of not leaving behind scars. Because it's just on my arm i've decided to live with it, but i'm with you - i'd be bothered by it if it was on my face where i could see it everyday. Enjoy your tv and cake - you deserve it!

  13. HA! I wonder if there are any sewing surgeons-- that combo kinda makes sense!

Hope you heal quickly (but still gets lots of couch time)!

Have you picked a favorite Project Runway contestant yet?

  14. I like Tu's portfolio. He looks like he could be a contender if he doesn't get overwhelmed. I love Daniel's earnest kookiness. It's still so early, and hard to tell yet who's really good. I was underwhelmed especially by the results of the first challenge.

  15. My mother was an OR nurse and she always said surgeon's are judged by the quality of their suturing skills. And according to her human's are much tougher and any fabric!
