Finished Object! Cinderella Dress

Just look at this face:

I'm a glutton for punishment. Clearly.

How else to explain why I made this Cinderella dress for my 4.5-year-old daughter this week. Mid-way through sewing it she informed me that she doesn't like Cinderella anymore. She likes Merida, the latest Disney Princess (TM) franchise. F. U. Disney:

Mirror, mirror, on the wall....
I drafted the pattern for the bodice using this tutorial at Homemade Toast, a blog I discovered through Pinterest. I bought the shiny poly satins in the Garment District for $2/yard. The tulle (which is sandwiched between two other skirt layers) was also $2/yard. The flower-print poly chiffon overlay was in my stash. I got it from a former neighbor a few years ago, and was saving it for such an occasion. Note the lovely ombre effect on the overlay:

The whole thing probably cost about $8. But it took a lot more time than I had bargained for.

The elastic shirring technique was new to me. It takes a lot of time (probably two nights of sewing for me), but the effect is pretty — AND it means my kid can slip this dress over her own head without any help (or a tantrum). Now that I know how to do it, I plan on making some summer dresses with shirred tops.

I also used my serger's rolled hem function to finish off the skirts. (Like I was going to labor over hemming this!).

I love the addition of the hip poufs:

I highly recommend the tutorial I followed. But I hope if you make this for your kid/niece/random strange child, that she's able to feign a little more enthusiasm than mine did.

  2. Maybe if you'd blown her some real glass slippers...

I think it looks fantastic, and who knows -- she may return to Cinderella someday soon!

  4. Someday she'll look back and tell you how awesome she remembers this to be, so don't worry :) And if you're looking for a quick Merida costume, McCalls 5499? I made up one of their other medieval dresses and it was loose enough where I didn't bother with the lace-up back...I can just slip it on over my head with a little squiggling!

  5. This is so cute! But it sounds like you've got a real-life princess on your hands! I guess you're lucky she doesn't have the power to banish you from the kingdom!

  6. Snort! It's a sewing law that the cute little things we plan to make for our daughters or other small relatives will always take 100 more hours than expected and will most likely kill your sewing machine and/or you. Just say no the next time.

    But this is really cute...

    1. Luckily my sewing machine survived (however, whether I will live on to make another garment for this kid is still in question!).

  8. Bwahaha! I love that face!! I'm just waiting for the day. I know I will experience the exact same thing with my own one day. I'm planning on sewing a lot for her before she can talk back! The dress looks gorgeous.

    1. Yes, enjoy sewing for your silent one. One day that child will learn to talk...and then three seconds later will be sassing you back!

  9. hahaha classic, that is so my niece. She changes her mind at the drop of a hat! I have a feeling your daughter will soon be all into Cinderella again though because this dress is GORGEOUS. Oh my gosh the sequins down the front? Love, and that shirring turned out amazingly. I can't believe that was a first for you because it seriously looks professionally done. Really well done Suzanne!

i'm sure that doesn't help at all, after two nights of shirring. TWO nights?! the dress is killer cute.

    1. I know. Shirring takes forever. Or at least it took me forever.

    1. Merida is the best. It's true. Cinderella is such a snore compared to that fiery redhead.
