Another Day, Another Halloween Costume: Last-minute Superhero!

I learned a valuable lesson this year: don't finish your toddler's Halloween costume too early if you want her to, you know, actually wear it. To add insult to injury I am losing in Burdastyle.com's costume contest to She-Ra. Damn '80s nostalgia. Maybe I can still take second place, or perhaps Bernina will take pity on me and bestow their machine on me. (vote here: http://www.burdastyle.com/gallery/275?page=181)

On Thursday night I pulled this superhero costume together for Lucy, using fabric I had in my stash (love this fabulous shiny blue spandex, which I got from my neighbour when she was cleaning out her stash). I didn't take any good pics yet of the whole outfit (these are from her preschool Halloween parade, which was a little chaotic in that herding-cats-kind-of-way.). See the shiny leggings I made by tracing a pair of leggings that fit her decently!

You can easily put together this costume using stuff from your kid's drawers: a pair of leggings, a long-sleeved T-shirt, some shiny fabric for the cape and shiny paper or fabric for the cuffs, headband and belt. You could probably run across the street to the drugstore and buy much of what you need. I printed off Martha Stewart's templates for the lightening bolt, the headband and "L" on her cape. The instructions were easy to follow. I sewed the pants, the cape and the lightening bolt onto her Tee, but you could hot glue to save time. I hotglued the belt and cuffs (and added velcro, so she could wear them more than once). Get the instructions here.
